Is It Wrong to be Strong?

Dalton England asks:
Professor Popinjay,
Is it wrong to be strong?

Dear Englander,
The word strength is an interesting one. Officially it’s definition is very slim. No, literally, its definition is very slim. The word stems from the Old German ‘stregida’ meaning slim and strong. The word ‘string’ actually takes its name from the same place. In fact the ‘G’ in “G-string’ actually stands for Germany. Tell your friends.
While the word ‘strength’ does not have many official definitions, it does have a multitude of applications and we have a lot of beliefs as to what is considered strong. One can be physically strong. One can be mentally strong. You can drink strong Coffee. Or like myself, if you only shower fortnightly then you can even have a strong smell.
We also have many misinterpretations of strength. Some regard stubbornness as strength. Some think being pushy is strength. Others believe selfishness is strength. Interestingly, there is another word which sums up all of these people and it rhymes with basspole. I shant tell you what word that is, but I do believe you would be delightfully charmed by it.
Real strength, my friend, is refraining from doing what you can, or want to do, or have the right to do, in order to do what you should, and don’t want to do, and must swallow your pride to make happen. Any fool can punch people’s fists with his face. Any fool can poop in a sack and light it on fire on a neighbors doorstep. The measure of true strength is determined not by how many reps you do or swirlies you distribute, but by what you will sacrifice for the sake of your fellow man… especially if that man calls you a basspole.

G-Strings and Honor, Professor Popinjay
