Robin and Marian

A Non-Review by Prof Popinjay

This serves as a sequel to most Robin Hood tales and takes up the story when Robin (Sean Connery) is old and gray and has had his fill of King Richard’s monkeyshines. It has its humor but it’s ultimately a bit of a let down. It’s like watching a childhood hero come back to do one more movie but he’s just not up to the task. There are action scenes but it even plays up the fact that he’s just old and tired. The Sheriff of Nottingham, who is kind of chill and likable in this, just kind of stands back and watches Robin and Little John grunt and groan their way through their various escapades.

The real point of this film, it seems,  is the relationship between Robin and Marian, hence the title.  Even that… well I won’t spoil it. But oof.

This film marks the end of an 8 year hiatus from film work by Audrey Hepburn, who plays Mariam.

It was interesting to see her again. Still, I think a sequel to Robin Hood could have been a lot more exciting, even with an aged Robin.

Is this the film in which Sean Connery decided he didn’t ever want to wear pants while filming? I don’t know. All I know is, the man definitely needed some pants in this film. Men in tights? Tights at least would have been much appreciated.

Oh, if you do watch this, be on the lookout for Richard Harris, Ian Holm, and Denholm Elliot. That’s Dumbledor the first, Old Bilbo, and Marcus Brody (from Indiana Jones films).
