—–Wow! To think I went into this with little to no interest! This. Was. Great! I’m almost sad to include this in a half-assed quickly slapped together article. It deserves analysis. Maybe I still will someday. The Man of LaMancha is a musical version of Don Quixote. It stars Peter O’Toole who is not the greatest singer but don’t worry, they compensate by hiring no other actors who are able to sing either. The really interesting aspect of this version is in the telling. The story of Don Quixote is told by a man who is arrested for heresy against the Catholic church and State during the time of the Spanish Inquisition. Weren’t expecting THAT, were you!?! The story is used as a means of entertainment and defense in a mock trial imposed upon the man by his fellow prisoners. The cinematic transitions from the dreary prison to the fantasy world of the story are flawless. These aspects, combined with the already compelling themes of Don Quixote’s story make for a remarkable achievement. I recommended this to anyone who likes to be inspired and grow as a person. Don Quixote treated people as they would want to be treated even if they had lost all respect for themselves. He inspired others to live up to the reputation he gave them. Was he crazy or did he understand something most don’t?
