Mighty Ducks 3

——-Who would have thought a far reaching cash grab would actually have a fairly original story line? WHO!?!

——-While sports movies tend to be focused on powerful emotions and diligence, they tend to suffer in the courtroom drama department.  Courtroom dramas are easy to crank out because all the roles are set up, one has simply to fill those roles with interesting characters and it practically writes itself. Courtroom dramas even have the luxury of the order of events being somewhat predetermined. Sports movies have a few more variables but for the most part a hockey movie is a hockey movie is a hockey movie. So imagine my surprise when the THIRD installment of the Mighty Ducks franchise actually had me wondering what was going to happen.

——-The first big shocker was Emilio’s lack of involvement in this film. Right off the stick we get a scene where Emilio tells the team captain he got an offer as regional hockey manager or something like that and he’s handing them off to a new coach whom he claims knows his stuff. I imagine the scene went very similarly to Emilio telling the producers of this film he got an offer for a huge role in the upcoming Mission: Impossible film which he is sure will flesh out into a myriad of sequels for him… More so than these films.

——Later in the film Emilio comes back to defend the kids in a legal battle and you know, it was actually great to see him get back to his lawyer roots. As a coach Emilio was kind of a jerk but as a lawyer he took names and kicked ass. I want to see a movie where Emilio just defends screwed over junior hockey league players who are getting the shaft from their sponsors. Finally sports movies and courtroom dramas will be combined into their own distinct genre!

——-Anyway this wasn’t great but it was better than what you might expect from a straight to video part 3. At any rate it was better than Iron Man 3 and/or Batman and Robin and THOSE movie were in theatres!
