If you ever want to see what Frankenstein’s monster would look like if he were a movie instead of a monster see Midway! The first title card of the film proclaims the wonderful use of actual color footage taken from actual warfare. What it doesn’t tell you is that very little if any of this footage was taken from the battle of Midway and most was used a million times over in other movies. This was a battle between U.S. and Japanese carriers but that didn’t stop the director from using footage of a German Messerschmidt or an English Spitfire, two planes I’m fairly certain were NOT present at the battle of Midway. Beyond this it was a decent portrayal of the event and Heston’s character was the only fictional one added, likely as a more interesting sounding board for his characters son who was in love with a Japanese girl. I really appreciated Heston’s lines about not caring about bigotrous B.S. regarding his sons relationship even in the midst of a war with Japan. That was a nice message. A lot of old stars in this, including MR. MIYAGI!!! That alone makes this film worth seeing!
