My Little Pony: The Movie

A Non-Review by Professor Popinay

In my last Non-review regarding the film Ghost Ship, I invited anyone to call me milk toast because I don’t care for most horror films. This Non-review might seal the deal. I have five children, four of them girls. They were not nearly as interested in the My Little Pony movie as I was but they provided a great excuse to go see this in the theater. I didn’t want any of the other parents thinking I’m some kind of weirdo. Also my children went to great lengths to hide my pink pony costume before we went which in retrospect was probably wisdom.

It was enjoyable. The humor wasn’t gut busting but I chuckled now and then. There were interesting characters and cool villains. The plot was semi-captivating. Was it worth seeing in the theater? Ultimately probably not. But I did at least gain the ability to say “I saw it in the theater!” and then bask in the strange looks I get from the loggers and millworkers who constitute my usual consorterie.

Would I watch it again? Sure. Some may not realize this but MLP, while it kind of used to be schlock slapped together to sell toys to little girls, it’s now wrapped around some pretty epic story arcs that appeal to boys and girls alike. No one was up in arms when everyone, LITERALLY EVERYONE, wanted to go see Disney’s The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast. MLP has some quality writers behind it and (very appealing to me) phenomenal voice actors! It’s a quality show on par with these great Disney films. Yes, they’re still trying to sell toys. Every cartoon is. I know it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. That’s fine. But don’t hate on it just because it makes you feel at odds with your masculinity if you happen to be born with an excessive dose. You can appreciate something for what it is no matter your persuasion and it doesn’t change who you are. So strap on your pink pony accouterments, tattoo a lollipop on your ass and prance gleefully about your Davenport while you binge this adorable show about cute little equine mutants who teach us about friendship!
