Uncharted vs. Pitch Meeting

A Non-review by Professor Popinjay

Uncharted (2022)

Pitch Meeting (2017-Present)

My wife and I enjoy watching Pitch Meeting on YouTube with Ryan George. If you’re unfamiliar, Ryan repeats a situation where a writer is pitching a film idea to a producer. The back and forth between these characters (both played by Ryan) exposes several absurd or tongue-in-cheek moments from the film the writer happens to be pitching. It’s quite humorous.

Ryan George as “The Writer” pitches his movie.

While I watch it religiously, it tends to ruin certain movies for me and it makes me feel kind of dumb. I know that’s not the greatest endorsement. Whoopsie!

If you’ve read any number of my non-reviews, you can likely tell, I am pretty forgiving when it comes to movies. If a film pacifies my brain for a couple hours, I’m usually satisfied. So I’ve sat through many films that probably weren’t that great, enjoying at least one aspect or another. I think that’s why these Non-reviews can be all over the place sometimes, with me never really settling on one opinion or another.

But then I’ll watch a Pitch Meeting episode about a film I just watched and he’ll point all these absurdities and I’ll think “Hey! He’s right! It WAS a dumb movie! I want my money back!”

Uncharted is one of these films. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Sure, some of the action was over the top a bit and there might’ve been some silly decisions throughout but whatever. I had fun.

Tom Holland is basically Spider-man in this film but don’t expect any mention of Spider-man. They’re just assuming you’ll know.

But then I watched the Pitch Meeting episode about Uncharted and sure enough Ryan George pointed out all these silly decisions and unbelievable action stunts and now I hate the film.

Just kidding. I don’t hate it. Fun is fun and I had fun. Also, Ryan’s observations are pretty undeniable and presented in an enjoyably sarcastic way which is also fun.

I guess my take away is: It’s okay that some moments requiring suspended disbelief have to happen in order for movies to be a form of enjoyable escapism. That’s what makes them fiction. And it’s fun to lampoon these moments too.

Uncharted was really fun with a great climax, so great in fact I associated it with a completely different movie. And Ryan George is one of the funniest people on YouTube.

Jonathan Decker and Alan Seawright, one a professor therapist who loves movies, the other a professional film maker who needs therapy. Lots of fun and lots of learning why we are the way we are.

On the other hand, if you want your love of great movies to be rekindled, Cinema Therapy is where to go for that. I’ve been binging them during my movie hiatus and thanks to their insights and excitement I can’t wait to get back into watching movies!
